Tamper Proof Rx Pad Vendors
| Tamper Proof Prescription Pads Required Soon
Beginning on March 1, 2008, all written prescriptions from provider offices must be on tamper resistant paper. This requirement is part of a federal law passed earlier in 2007.
This new law applies to all prescribed drugs, including over-the-counter drugs, if they are prescribed. The law does not apply to telephone, fax or electronic prescriptions. In emergency circumstances, a pharmacy may fill the prescription as long as the pharmacy verifies it and a faxed, electronic, or compliant written prescription from the prescriber is forwarded to the pharmacy within 72 hours after the prescription was filled. See the next article for the details!

Tamper Resistant Prescription Pads—The Details
After March 1, 2008, tamper-resistant prescription forms must meet at least one of the following characteristics:
- No copying: Pads must prevent unauthorized copying of completed or blank prescription forms. For example: Pantographs that reveal the word “void” when copied.
- No alterations: Pads must prevent erasure or modification of writing on the prescription form. For example, chemical stains or altered backgrounds reveal attempts at ink or toner removal.
- No counterfeiting: Pads must be distinctive and incapable of being reproduced, including watermarks or other devices that can't be reproduced.
After October 1, 2008, the pads must meet all three characteristics to be considered tamper-resistant.
